Rob Vanderbeek has more than 15 years of restructuring experience in a broad range of industries, including retail, healthcare, hospitality, energy, equipment leasing, distribution, real estate and financial services. He has acted as financial advisor to creditors and lenders and served in an interim management capacity providing crisis management, turnaround and bankruptcy services to distressed and/or bankrupt companies.

Rob has assisted companies through the restructuring process both in and out of court supervision. His significant public engagements for companies/debtors have included Kmart, North Oakland Medical Center, Foster Wheeler, Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, Allied Holdings, Lodgian, Bennett Funding Group and 1031 Tax Group. His responsibilities have included business and strategic planning, expense reductions, treasury, cash forecasting and liquidity analysis, financial reporting, asset disposition and financial reconstruction.

He has advised creditors committees or lenders during the numerous bankruptcies and restructurings including Calpine, Ultimate Electronics, National Energy Group, Livent, National Restaurants Management, Merry–Go–Round and 47th Street Photo. His roles have included monitoring financial performance and liquidity, compliance reporting, recovery analysis, due diligence review of business plans, proposing overhead and other cost reductions and reviewing, analyzing monitoring the disposition of assets.

Specific industry experience includes:
  • Retail: Cash forecasting; four-wall store level cash flow analysis to identify underperforming stores; leasehold analysis and negotiations; contract review; partial and complete GOB sales; and monitoring store closings.
  • Healthcare: Strategic and contingency planning; cash flow projections; liquidity monitoring; and healthcare billing audits in connection with numerous hospitals and healthcare providers.
  • Hospitality / Real Estate: Strategic assessment of the hotel portfolio; leading the due diligence and sale process; renegotiating financial covenants for credit agreements; liquidity management as interim treasurer; wind-down offices; and close transactions.
  • Energy: Viability analysis of generating facilities and financial projections; analysis of fuel price risk/impact; liquidation and going concern valuations; evaluation of strategic alternatives; review of trading book; and recovery analysis.

Rob has played key roles in litigation support assignments and forensic financial investigations. He has performed solvency analyses in defense of fraudulent conveyance claims, damages/recovery/liquidation analyses and going concern valuations. He helped investigate one of the largest ponzi schemesin US history as well as a large public company undergoing a high-profile independent investigation for fraud and public corruption. He was appointed by the United States Department of Justice as chapter 11 examiner to perform funds tracing and investigate allegations of impropriety in connection with a failed law practice.

Before joining Goldin, Rob was a Managing Director in the Restructuring & Turnaround practice at Huron Consulting Group. Prior to that, he worked in the restructuring practices of AlixPartners and FTI Consulting. Earlier, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as a bank regulator.

Rob was named in the 2007 People to Watch by Turnarounds and Workouts for his outstanding achievements in the profession. He is a Certified Insolvency & Restructuring Advisor (CIRA) and holds a Certified Distressed Business Valuation (CDBV) certification. He has served as an instructor teaching parts of both the CIRA and CDBV program. He is co-author of several chapters of 2005 Bankruptcy Revisions – Implications for Businesses and Financial Advisors, published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors (“AIRA”). He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Turnaround Management Association (“TMA”) and AIRA.

Rob is a holder of a B.S. in finance from Lehigh University, a M.B.A. from NYU Stern School of Business and a J.D. from Pace University School of Law.
